Internationally acclaimed violinist and vocalist Lucia Micarelli presents Anthropology, a concert experience that invites audiences on a journey through music’s essential place in human life. Blending classical and folk traditions from across time and culture, the program reflects on how music has helped us carry stories, hold memory, express emotion and stay connected—across generations, borders and beliefs. Inspired in part by the writings of Oliver Sacks, Anthropology is a personal and expansive reflection on what unites us—and how music, in all its forms, helps us remember who we are.
This program draws connections across time and tradition—placing a 16th-century choral setting by Thomas Tallis alongside Joni Mitchell’s Both Sides Now, or pairing the quiet intensity of solo Bach with the raw intimacy of an Appalachian ballad. Works that borrow from folk idioms, like Kodály’s Duo for Violin and Cello or Edgar Meyer’s 1B, sit beside traditional songs that have traveled through many voices and lives. Through her curation and reimagining of this repertoire, Micarelli reveals the shared emotional language of music—and its power to illuminate the human experience across history and culture.
She is joined by bassist Nate Farrington, principal bass of the Los Angeles Opera and a Curtis Institute graduate, whose dynamic career spans classical, jazz and chamber music. A frequent guest with major orchestras including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony and San Francisco Symphony, he is also a sought-after chamber collaborator, vocalist and multi-genre performer. Cellist Eric Byers, a soloist, composer and founding member of the Calder Quartet, has appeared with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Cincinnati Symphony and at premier venues including Carnegie Hall and Wigmore Hall. In addition to his chamber work, his compositions have been performed by ensembles such as Sybarite5, and his film scoring includes two collaborations with Micarelli. Together, the trio creates a sound that is expressive, grounded and open—rooted in classical craft, yet deeply connected to storytelling and improvisation.
Anthropology offers presenters and audiences a concert experience that is both artistically rich and culturally relevant—bridging musical lineages and lived experience and inviting listeners into a shared space of reflection, curiosity and connection.
